Night Out on the Town

Half-hour south of Madison, Wisconsin is the small Swiss Villiage of New Glarus. This Green County town embraces its heritage much like many of the other Wisconsin towns. Most notably is the authentic Swiss food of the New Glarus Hotel.
This isn't a Swiss wannabe restaurant, but the authentic foods you'd find in Europe. On the menu are the Schnitzels, Roestis, Fondues, Raclettes, and assorted sausages. On certain days you will be entertained by local polka bands and on other days recorded Swiss Yodelers are on the speakers.
In order to make the trip complete, stop by the local New Glarus Bakery, Maple Leaf Cheese and Chocolate Haus as well as the New Glarus Brewery for the freshest local goods. A definite worthwhile four hour trip from Iowa City.

Video Staff Tailgater

After the first week of fall camp and the day's Kid's Day activities, the video staff got together at our house for its own tailgater.

This is an opportunity for the guys to have a little home cooking. More importantly they get spoiled by my wife's home cooking.

On the grill were hamburgers and brats, brats that were purchased at a meat locker in New Glarus, Wisconsin. These were authentic.

Afterwards Colin convinces the crew for a little basketball in the driveway.

A veteran member of the video staff, Kyle Yoder demonstrates his range on the court. However this shot came up short.

But at the end of the night a little friendly wager between Kyle and myself resulted in a game of H-O-R-S-E. I defeated Kyle H-O-R-S-E to H-O.

New Glarus

The Summer vacation season came to a close as we flew back into Milwaukee and took the opportunity to stock up on some of Wisconsin's finest. After finding out a favorite butcher shop in Madison had closed to move to another location, we headed to a favorite local stop in New Glarus, Wisconsin.

New Glarus is also known as Swiss Town based on its Swiss influence from its early settlers.
New Glarus is known for its local specialties from the Brewery Company, numerous meat shops, restaurants and bakeries. A favorite of the citizens of Wisconsin is New Glarus' own brews. Best known is Spotted Cow while a favorite of the Engelbert household is Totally Naked.

On Main Street is the town's bakery, meat shop and chocolate house. Every day there is something new to choose from in each one of the businesses. Today's new exploration is the Bubble Gum Fudge in the Chocolate Haus and the Rhubarb Bars in the Bakery.

Similar to the Herky on Parade campaign in Iowa City / Coralville, New Glarus painted cows to be placed at various spots throughout town.

Best Beers

Came upon this link while doing a little reading on the web tonight. It has a list of this person's "Best Beers" to try.

Number two on the list is New Glarus Belgian Red. I have not tried this brand from the small Swiss village in south central Wisconsin. My wife and I have tried "Spotted Cow" as well as "Totally Naked." We recommend each highly.

Spotted Cow is the trademark beer of the company. It is found in restaurants and grocery stores throughout the state of Wisconsin as well as Miller Park in Milwaukee. Due to high taxes occurred when shipping outside the state, the people at New Glarus Brewing Co decided to keep this brew local.

On our next trip to the Badger State, we may have to try the Belgian Red.
