Iowa Softball Improves its Record

Iowa Softball defeats WIU, 6-0 in six.
A non-conference opponent within the Big Ten season didn't deter many people from attending the Iowa Softball game at Bob Pearl Field on Sunday. Western Illinois came to Coralville, the home to Iowa Softball, and it wasn't much of a contest. The Hawkeyes bolted to an early 5-0 lead after one and extended their lead to 6-0 in the third. That was all the scoring and the Hawkeyes were victorious. Over 700 fans were in attendance on a perfect day.

Hawkeyes v Yellow Jackets

Iowa and Georgia Tech have never met each other on the football field, and have little history athletically, but the two school's paths have crossed twice in the last nine months.

In March Iowa hosted first and second round games of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament. As the #8 seed, the Hawkeyes faced the #9 seed Yellow Jackets. The ladies from Atlanta proved to be too much inside and the Hawkeyes lost in the opening round. Tech went on to face the #1 seed Oklahoma two nights later, but were not up to the challenge of the Sooners. Georgia Tech's season ended in Iowa City after putting the Hawkeyes on the sidleines.

A few months later tables were turned and it was the Hawkeyes travelling to Atlanta to participate in the NCAA Women's Softabll Tournament. The Yellow Jackets were the highest seeded team in the double-elimination regional, but the Hawkeyes lost to Auburn and Boston University and did not face the host school.

This time it is a neutral-field...Miami's Land Shark Stadium is the scene of the latest match-up between the Hawkeyes and Yellow Jackets.

Softball Season Underway

In less than ideal weather conditions, Colin and I attended the first home softball game of the season. The Hawkeyes beat South Dakota in a double header taking the first 8-0. One sport that doesn't worry about attendance is the Iowa Softball team. Temperatures hovered in the 50s with a wind chill in the 40s and intermittent rain showers did not keep a close to capacity crowd away. This was also the first game at the Pearl Softball Facility since the floods of 2008 closed the diamonds due to eight feet of water.
